Minecraft: A Mini-Review
by Declan Chiu
What is Minecraft?
Basically Minecraft is a game where you mine resources and build anything you want. It’s a world that belongs to you and you can do anything you want in it.
Monsters attack your fort every night, with spiders that scale walls, creepers that explode and zombies that want to eat your brains. To defend your world from evil, you can make (Crafting is the technical term) swords and armor and bring the fight to them, instead of hiding in your home. You can’t die in minecraft, since you always reborn every time you get killed. You can fight forever, and always come back for more.
Apart from exciting monster killing there is also the “creativity”. This part is the main part of the game and what makes it so fun. Reality is depressing. You can only do very little, working and working and working. In Minecraft, everything is different. No one can stop you, or make you stop. You can do anything you want in there, from writing “I hate my boss” on signs, to building huge buildings of staggering size.
Building is a important part of minecraft, apart from crafting and killing monsters. As long as you have the resources to do it, you can build ANYTHING. From small shacks, to soaring skyscrapers, minecraft offers the space and resources to build the house of your dreams. All you have to do is to right click with a block in hand, and a foundation is there, waiting for you to continue on! Build with lots of different blocks, red and blue and green and even PINK! Yes, even pink! Or, if you feel brave, build a portal and venture into HELL! Get lava, dig netherrack, shovel glowstone, a world is waiting for you to build in!
The newest feature on Minecraft, you can now play with your friends! Band together to hunt monsters, or settle down and build the city of your dreams. Sometimes Minecraft can be very lonely, with no-one to play with. Once Multiplayer (SMP for short) has been developed, Minecraft has finally changed from a one player game to a socializing platform!
The variety or resources in Minecraft is stunning. There are 104 different blocks in Minecraft, and many different kind of tools. The weakest tools are wooden tools. The toughest tools are diamond tools. To make tools, you have to make a crafting table. A proper crafting table has a 3x3 grid, where you can put in different materials to make tools. For example for a diamond pickaxe you put 2 sticks in the middle of the grid, leaving the top row empty, then fill up the top row with diamond. With different combinations of materials in different positions of the grid, you can produce almost everything!!
